about

Venus Ritus is the latest planetary concept album by Berlin-based, Australian musician and occult philosopher Kris Vango (following from 2018’s ‘Ard’ - Earth and 2019’s ‘Mother Moon’ - Moon). Kris’ aim is to approach each planet as a separate concept piece and album, expressing astrological and mythological concepts and constructing neo-mythologies, guiding the listener into mystical sonic landscapes that echo both the observable physical sciences of each planet and their non-physical esoteric and astrological themes.

With a professional background in music production, visual art, graphic design and UX design paired with an appetite for mythology, astrology, alchemy and the occult as ways to investigate the human psyche; Kris playfully constructs sonic and visual worlds, constructing avatars for each concept piece, both live and visually to embody each planetary concept piece.

Venus Ritus is the first of two codependent releases due for 2020 and will be followed by Ares (Mars), to be released later in the year. In tradition, these two planets have often reflected the binary nature of gender; the male and the female; masculine and feminine. As a queer and non-binary identifying artist, redesigning these two mythologies for a contemporary and increasingly genderless culture seemed vital and relevant. As a concept piece Venus Ritus transforms dated concepts of femininity and the woman as being soft, vulnerable and submissive, and reappropriate this as the woman and the feminine being fully realised, using vulnerability as a weapon and celebrating fully empowerment. In contrast Ares, breaks down the brutality of masculinity and serves as a catharsis for anger, impulse and the need to mature adolescent masculinity within the collective. Both, of course, are idealistic utopian visions. But serve as affecting artistic pieces that draw the listener into analysing these concepts within themselves, where Kris uses genre and varying vocal techniques (inspired by fellow conceptual artists like Bjørk, Mike Patton, Grimes and Arca) to further express artistically each planet as their own genres. It is this playful sense of musical alchemy underpinning Kris’ work that encourage spiritual exploration and escape the feeling of being imposing of their themes and ideas

Sonically, Kris traverses a cross pollination and re-evolution of club music’s sonic textures, with a re-connecting of the Shamanic origins of uniting collectives into a shared experience–utilising genre and collaboration as tools to explore varying planetary landscapes. ... more
